The Institute of Art History was formed in 1968 as a scientific unit within the University of Belgrade with the intention to meticulously analyze various ideas, matters and directions in Serbian Art History, and its relationship towards Eastern and Western European Art History. The Institute not only collects and files scientific documentation but promotes knowledge and also encourages young scientists and research associates to develop relations with other domestic and foreign Art History institutes.
The Institute is more than proud to
acknowledge that for over 40 years of its existence has
accomplished numerous research projects published in over hundred of
articles and studies, and in over twenty books, which is of major impact
and significance for the domestic History of Art.
Since its establishment, the Institute for Art History has published
three series of publications: monographs, studies and materials,
altogether counting for 21 academic texts.
The Institute also
publishes Zograf, a journal for medieval art, that is considered to be
one of the world’s most famous periodicals on Eastern Christian Medieval
Art, and there have been 35 issues of this journal published so far.
For over 40 years, ever since its formation, the
Institute of Art History has started systematically collecting
documentation on Medieval Art in Serbia
while classifying it within photo, plans (map), and graphic data. Today,
the Institute’s documentation represents a major database for the
entire Balkan region.
